Examining the Impacts of Congreso’s Éxito Program at Kensington Creative and Performing Arts

Earning a high school diploma is a milestone that has been linked to many beneficial outcomes later in one’s life. Yet, youth leaving school prior to obtaining a diploma remains a challenge nationwide, particularly in large cities. Congreso’s Éxito program, first implemented in 2008-2009, has aimed to support students and prevent school leaving.

In partnership with Research for Action and the William Penn Foundation, the latest report linked below focuses on the impact our Éxito program has had at Kensington Creative and Performing Arts High School from 2016-2020

Key Findings

  • Participation rates lagged behind initial expectations, both in number of students and intensity of participation, but at least a third of students had sustained participation over multiple years.
  • Éxito participants had significantly higher graduation and on-track rates and better credit accumulation compared to matched comparisons, but no significant impacts were found on rates of school-leaving or GPAs and minimal impacts were detected on behavioral outcomes
  • Students with more participation saw more improved outcomes compared to non-participants and case management had a larger effect on student outcomes than afterschool attendance alone.
  • Éxito was highly effective at getting students back on track to graduation after falling off track during their first year of high school.

Congreso’s Board Secretary Recognized as a 2022 Top Doctor

Congreso would like to congratulate Dr. Maribel Hernández, Congreso Board Secretary and Cardiologist at Main Line Health, for being recognized by Al Día Magazine as a 2022 AL DÍA Top Doctor! What an achievement!

Dedicated to advancing the cause of equity in Public Health, while upholding the ideals of excellence in Medicine, this annual recognition of #OURDOCTORS has become an anticipated media event, a once a year special edition, and an unbiased community resource that finally identifies the names and the faces of the most prominent physicians of Hispanic descent and diverse backgrounds making daily contributions to the quality of healthcare in the U.S.

Maria Celebrates 25 years at Congreso

Congreso would like to congratulate Maria Ulloa, Intake Coordinator within Congreso’s Latina Domestic Violence Program, who recently celebrated her 25th work anniversary with us! Read below as she reflects on her time in the Congreso Familia.

“It has been an honor and a privilege for me to work for Congreso. Congreso is such an amazing organization that brings so much hope to the most vulnerable people in our community.  When I first came to be interviewed at Congreso, one of the questions I was asked was “what is your goal for the next 5 years?” And here I am today in my 25th year.

Throughout these 25 years, I have met many beautiful people that have become part of my story. Many have gone on from the program, but they still live in my heart.  My accomplishment has been to be able to assist my community and our many clients experiencing Domestic Violence get connected to the proper services to meet their needs.

A quote that has inspired me throughout my career has been: “Let no one ever come to you without leaving better & happier. Be the living expression of God’s Kindness: Kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, and kindness in your smile.” - Mother Theresa.

Thank you Congreso for giving me the opportunity and believing in me 25 years ago.”
