Celebrating Black History Month with Local Philadelphia Leaders

This past month, Congreso joined in celebrating Black History Month by inviting Black leaders and pioneers in our own community to participate in a speaker series with the Congreso Familia!

Speakers included: Congreso Board Member Bridgett Battles, Diversity Manager at Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health; Congreso Board Member Mustafa Rashed, President & CEO of Bellevue Strategies; Sybille Damas, Congreso's Chief Operations Officer; and Tiffany M. Newmuis, Senior Manager, Local Media Development within Corporate Administration for Comcast NBCUniversal.

Through Zoom, these individuals shared their amazing journeys, current work, inspirations, reflections, and even family roots.

Black History Month resources, events, and virtual exhibitions were also shared via our social media channels and through our weekly internal tips & resources emails. We hope you checked them out!

A special gracias to all of our speakers! We are so grateful to have such inspiring and passionate individuals in our Congreso Familia and in our community.

Board Member and Cardiologist Dr. Maribel Hernandez Presents on COVID Vaccine and Heart Health

Congreso was also happy to host our Board Member Dr. Maribel Hernandez for two great workshops for our Congreso team members this month!

COVID-19 Vaccine Webinar

The first webinar with Dr. Maribel Hernandez featured Dr. Chaparro Rojas, specialist in infectious diseases, from Main Line Health Systems to present on the COVID-19 Vaccine.

Congreso employees learned what makes up a virus, how a vaccine was created so fast, why vaccinations are important in the fight against COVID, and debunked  vaccine myths!

Heart Health Webinar

The second webinar was focused on Heart Disease Prevention for Heart Health Month. Team members  reviewed symptoms of heart attacks, how to maintain  healthy blood pressure and cholesterol, and tips for a healthy heart.

The session also featured Dalina Soto sharing about  Nutrition and Heart Healthy Latin Food. Soto, Founder and Bilingual Dietitian of Nutritiously Yours & Your Latina  Nutrition, concluded the webinar with easy steps to add nutrition into your diet, key nutrients to consider when doing so, and supermarket and meal planning tips.

Gracias to Dr. Maribel Hernandez, Dr. Chaparro Rojas, and Dalina Soto for sharing your time and knowledge!

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Did you know February is national Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month? Congreso’s Latina Domestic Violence Program (LDVP) shared helpful information, resources, and stories all month long reminding everyone that #LoveisLearned and people of all ages can learn to be in healthier relationships!

Staff also shared relationship advice they'd give their younger selves:

“Your relationships don't have to look like your family's relationships. You deserve love and respect from whoever your partner is.”

"Don’t rush things. Get to know people. Go slower."

In addition, Congreso featured in a Facebook Live event on Philatinos. Kira Bellolio and Ramona Peralta from our LDVP team joined Cristina Perez, Psychologist at Women Against Rape, to share important domestic violence information,  resources, and strategies. To watch the segment, click here!
